Lennox Castle

Lennox Castle stands in ruins on the edge of Lennoxtown, East Dunbartonshire, about 19 kilometres north of Glasgow. Built between 1837 and 1841 by David Hamilton for John Lennox Kincaid, it replaced an earlier house on the estate. The castle became famous for its later use as Lennox Castle Hospital, Scotland’s largest institution for people with learning disabilities. Opened in 1936, the hospital grew to house 1,360 patients cared for by fewer than 500 staff, many untrained. Reports described overcrowding, underfunding and poor conditions, with patients often malnourished. The hospital closed in 2002 as care policies changed and society moved towards community-based support. A fire in 2008 left the castle in ruins, though it remains a Category A listed building. Part of the grounds now hosts Celtic F.C.’s Lennoxtown Training Centre, opened in 2007. Other areas have been developed into a long-term residential project called Campsie View, with one phase completed in 2015. Visitors see crumbling stone walls and fire-damaged interiors where the castle once stood. The training centre’s modern pitches sit nearby, contrasting with the decaying structure. Paths wind through the overgrown grounds, leading towards Lennoxtown village and the newer housing. The site tells two stories: one of 19th-century grandeur and another of 20th-century institutional care.
