White Spout

White Spout is a waterfall in East Dun­bartonshire, near Glasgow. It sits where a burn drops over a rock lip into a deep pool. The name ‘spout’ marks it as a fall with a single straight drop rather than a cascade. Scottish place names often use ‘linn’ for falls or pools, but here the older word ‘spout’ remains. The burn is one of many short, steep streams that tumble from the Kilpatrick Hills. Its modest height shows how even small burns can carve dramatic features in the landscape. The fall is worth the short walk from the village of Bowling. It is one of the few named spouts close to a main road, reached by a footpath beside the Forth and Clyde Canal. Visitors can stand on a small bridge to watch the water plunge into the pool below. The drop is not large, but the sound and spray fill the glen on wet days. Its modest size makes it easy to visit without long hikes through rough country. At the site a narrow path leads down to the pool’s edge. The rock lip is worn smooth by centuries of water. The water is clear in dry spells, brown after rain. Trees lean over the glen, shading the path in summer. The canal towpath above offers a quiet walk with views across the valley. The fall itself is small, yet it shows how water shapes the land in the west of Scotland.
