East Putney tube station

East Putney station stands on Upper Richmond Road in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It is a District line stop on the Wimbledon branch, between Putney Bridge and Southfields. The station marks the boundary between fare zones two and three. Its entrance sits beside a pair of road bridges over the road. The line opened in 1889 when the District Railway extended from Putney Bridge to Wimbledon. Steam trains ran until 1905, when electric services began. Main-line trains from Waterloo once passed through the station until 1941. The track layout still shows the old junction to the Waterloo–Reading line, though only the eastern side remains in use. Visitors find a quiet island platform with two active staircases. The western side platform for westbound trains is closed and covered in plants. The remaining platforms serve six trains each hour to Wimbledon and to Tower Hill. Buses 37 and 337 stop outside the entrance.
