Putney Arts Theatre

Putney Arts Theatre stands in the Union Chapel in Putney, a building constructed by Sir Samuel Morton Peto in the late 19th century. The chapel served an original congregation before the London City Council took it over. In 1968, Group 64 leased the chapel and later bought it in 1998, renaming it Putney Arts Theatre. The opening night featured Sir John Mills, a long-time patron. Today it operates as a registered charity and community space. The theatre hosts two resident groups: Group 64 Youth Theatre for younger performers and Putney Theatre Company for adults. A major renovation in 2017 updated the building while preserving its character. Performances range from new writing to classic plays, supported by local talent. The space remains a hub for creative activity in southwest London. Visitors find a warm, intimate auditorium with a stage framed by the chapel’s original architecture.
