Putney Bridge tube station

Putney Bridge tube station stands on the Wimbledon branch of the District line, between Parsons Green and East Putney stations in the south of Fulham. It sits beside Fulham High Street and New Kings Road, a short walk from the northern end of Putney Bridge. The station’s name comes from the bridge, though the building itself lies on the Fulham side of the Thames. Its entrance shows an ornate yellow brick façade added when the station opened. The original name in 1880 was Putney Bridge & Fulham, later changed to Putney Bridge & Hurlingham and finally to Putney Bridge in 1932.
The station is worth the journey for its history and the wartime relic still visible on the southbound platform. A concrete pillbox built in 1940 stands at the platform’s southern end, designed as a look-out post with narrow loopholes. Nearby, Fulham Palace and its restored garden lie in Bishop’s Park, once the home of the Bishops of London. The Grade I listed palace includes a small museum and a riverside route leads past All Saints Church to the site. On matchdays the station becomes busy with supporters heading to Craven Cottage, about a kilometre to the north-west.
Visitors find the platforms arranged with three tracks, though only two are in regular use. The former bay platform was brought back into service in 2016 after track changes removed a speed restriction. London buses serve the station with routes including 14, 22, 39 and several night routes. The surroundings offer a mix of historic buildings, riverside walks and sporting events when Fulham Football Club plays at Craven Cottage.
