Burgstall Burgberg

The Burgstall Burgberg is a vanished Celtic ring-wall site on the 535-metre summit of the Burgberg, a wooded hill 1.9 kilometres north-west of Oberspeltach in the Schwäbisch Hall district. The remains lie within the Burgberg-Vorhöhen and Speltachbucht natural area, where the hilltop once carried two or more concentric ramparts now flattened into grassy terraces. A small landscape-protection zone covers the open plateau and its surrounding woodland edge. For more than two centuries a chapel stood at the highest point of the Burgberg forest. Today the summit is marked by a tall observation tower and a club hut with a simple eating place run by a local walking association. Four marked footpaths converge here, including the Main-Donau-Bodensee long-distance trail that shares its route with the Franconian-Swabian branch of the Camino de Santiago. A circular cycle path also loops around the base of the hill. Visitors reach the plateau by walking the gentle paths through the Burgberg forest. The tower offers wide views over the surrounding countryside, while the club hut provides light refreshments. The flattened ramparts and ditches are still visible along the slopes, and the protected plateau edge gives a quiet place to rest. The combination of ancient earthworks, modern paths and distant vistas makes the Burgberg a rewarding stop for walkers and cyclists.
