Flügelau Castle

The Wasserburg Flügelau stands in a damp meadow near where the Herrenbach stream meets the Maulach, about a kilometre south-west of Crailsheim-Roßfeld in the Schwäbisch Hall district. The site sits in a low-lying wetland that once made the approach difficult for any attackers. The first written hint of the place appears around 1240, when a count called Chrafto is mentioned as lord of Flügelau. Later accounts name Konrad, the first Graf of Flügelau, as the builder, with a firm mention of the castle around 1250. The family died out early in the 14th century, and by 1357 the stronghold was already in ruins. Only a low earth mound, about three metres high, remains of the once rectangular tower with its surrounding ramparts and moat. The north side still shows the clearest traces of the old defensive earthworks, though elsewhere they are faint. Drainage ditches dug in more recent times cut across parts of the site, following the outline of the vanished walls. No stonework survives above ground, yet the shape of the vanished castle can still be traced in the landscape. Visitors walk across a flat meadow where the Herrenbach joins the Maulach. The quiet wetland stretches away, broken only by the low earthworks and the single mound. The absence of modern buildings keeps the scene close to what medieval travellers would have seen. A few information boards explain the site’s history without cluttering the view. The place invites a slow stroll around the faint outlines, letting the past speak through the land itself.
