Burgstall Onolzheim

Burg Onolzheim stands two kilometres west of Onolzheim, a Crailsheim district in the Schwäbisch Hall district. It was a small motte castle built on an artificial mound surrounded by a ditch and bank. The site lies in a flat meadow near the Neuer See pond. The tower once rose above the marshland, giving the defenders a clear view. The castle may have belonged to the Lords of Onolzheim, local nobles mentioned between 1284 and 1420. They served different lords: the Counts of Flügelau, then the House of Hohenlohe, and finally the Margraves of Ansbach. After the family died out, the castle fell into disuse. Today only grass-covered earthworks remain. Visitors walk across the quiet meadow where the mound once stood. A low bank and shallow ditch mark the old defences. The view stretches over the flat land and the pond. The place feels remote, with only the sound of wind and birds. It invites a short pause to imagine the small wooden tower that once guarded this spot.
