Brixton Mosque

The Brixton Mosque, also known as Masjid ibn Taymeeyah, stands in Gresham Road in Brixton, South London. It is a Salafi Sunni mosque managed by Black British converts. The building has been a focus of attention for decades. Its history includes periods of controversy linked to individuals who later became notorious. The mosque gained notoriety in the 1990s when radical preachers visited. Abdullah el-Faisal spoke to crowds of up to 500 people before being ejected in 1993. Richard Reid attended between 1996 and 1998 after converting in prison. Zacarias Moussaoui visited in 1996 and 1997 before being expelled. Former chairman Abdul Haqq Baker warned police about extremist groups targeting young worshippers. Visitors find a plain, functional mosque building in an ordinary street. Inside, worshippers gather for prayers and study. The mosque has worked to distance itself from past controversies. Its leaders have spoken publicly about efforts to counter radicalisation. The surrounding area remains a busy part of Brixton with shops and homes nearby.
