Brixton tube station

Brixton tube station stands at Brixton Road in south London’s Lambeth borough. It marks the southern end of the Victoria line, the next stop north being Stockwell. The station holds the largest roundel on the entire London Underground network. The station opened in 1971 and now handles over thirty-three million entries and exits each year. It ranks nineteenth busiest on the network by passenger use. In the 2000s the building was fully refurbished, adding step-free access and new lighting in the escalator shaft. The roundel on the façade was also enlarged during this work. Inside, three escalators connect the ticket hall to the platforms, with lifts providing step-free access. The platforms display Hans Unger’s brick-themed tiled murals. Above the main staircase, temporary artworks by Njideka Akunyili Crosby and others reflect the local community. Outside, Brixton railway station lies about one hundred metres away, linking the area to central London and beyond.
