Brixton House

Brixton House is a theatre in Brixton, part of the London Borough of Lambeth. It opened in 2022 on Coldharbour Lane, replacing Ovalhouse which had operated in Kennington since the 1960s. The theatre traces its roots to the 1930s when it began as Christ Church (Oxford) Clubs. These clubs provided sports, skills training and supervised leisure for young people from disadvantaged areas in South London. In the 1960s the organisation shifted focus to theatre and became known as Oval House Theatre. Ovalhouse closed in 2020 before moving to Brixton. The theatre aims to be a cultural hub for social entertainment and artistic inspiration. It is led by inaugural artistic director Gbolahan Obisesan. Brixton House has two performance spaces, seating 180 and 120 audience members. The building was designed by Edmund Wilson of Foster Wilson Architects. It sits next to Nuclear Dawn, one of the Brixton murals, and retains views of the artwork. Visitors find a modern theatre designed for intimate performances. The smaller space seats 120, the larger 180, both arranged to bring the audience close to the stage. The building’s design allows views of the Nuclear Dawn mural from inside. The theatre hosts new productions including Mugabe, My Dad and Me by Tonderai Munyevu and Station by Hussina Raja. It stands as a new cultural landmark in Brixton, continuing the legacy of its predecessor while serving the local community.
