Seckau Tauern

The Seckau Tauern form a small subrange of the Low Tauern in the Austrian Central Alps. They lie in the Austrian state of Styria, near the village of Seckau. The range is bounded by the valleys of the Ingeringbach and Liesing streams. Its northwestern section is sometimes called the Trieben Tauern, where the Triebener Tauern pass crosses from Trieben to Judenburg. The Seckau Tauern border the Ennstal Alps to the north and east, the Lavanttal Alps to the south, and the Rottenmann and Wölz Tauern to the west. The range is mainly important for regional mountain sports all year round. Only a few summits attract visitors from outside the region for hiking and ski touring. The highest mountains are the Geierhaupt at 2,417 metres, the Hochreichhart at 2,416 metres, the Seckauer Zinken at 2,398 metres, and the Maierangerkogel at 2,356 metres. The Sonnleitner Hut stands at 1,215 metres and is reached from Gaal in one and a half hours. The Triebental Hut at 1,104 metres serves as a base from Trieben, while the Hochreichhart Schutzhaus sits at 1,483 metres. Visitors find several alpine huts managed by the Austrian Alpine Club and the Austrian Tourist Club. The Sonnleitner Hut offers 27 mattresses for self-sufficient guests, while the Triebental Hut provides 18 mattresses and a winter room with an AV key. The Hochreichhart Schutzhaus sits at a higher elevation. The surrounding valleys and passes provide routes for walking and ski touring. The Benedictine monastery in Seckau adds cultural interest nearby. The landscape offers views of the surrounding ranges and summits.
