Schrimpf Kogel

The Schrimpfkogel is a 2,207-metre peak in the Seckauer Tauern range, part of the Lower Tauern in Styria. It sits on the main ridge between the Schober Pass and Gaal, west of the Geierhaupt, the group’s highest point. The Liesingtörl col, around 2,080 metres, separates the two summits. To the east the ridge continues over the Schaunitztörl and Hahnenkamm towards the Kettentalkogel and the Hohentauern Pass. The mountain marks the Alpine watershed: the Finsterliesing flows north to the Liesing, while the Donnerofen cirque drains south to the Ingeringbach; both rivers reach the Mur. West of the summit the Günbach feeds the Enns via the Triebenbach and Palten. The peak lies in the municipality of Wald am Schoberpass, close to the borders with Hohentauern and Gaal. The Schrimpfkogel is rarely climbed, as the region has no managed huts and the main ridge crossing demands a long day’s walk. The Seckauer Tauern high route passes just below the summit, following poorly marked paths. Its geology belongs to the crystalline core of the Seckauer Tauern, with Permocarbon gneiss forming the ancient Alpine basement.
