Grünhorn

The Grünhorn is a 2,039-metre peak in the Allgäuer Alps of Vorarlberg. It stands within the Baader mountain frame, a ridge of Flysch rock known for its rich plant life. The double-summit grass mountain drops steeply only on its north-east side, overlooking the Steinmandl to the north and the Hochstarzel to the south. Climbers reach the top by three routes. The easiest is the east flank from the Schwarzwasserhütte or from Baad via the Ochsenhofer gap, taking one and a half to two and a half hours. The broad south ridge from the Starzeljoch takes three and a half hours from Schoppernau or two and a half from Baad. The north ridge from the Steinmandl is shorter but needs sure-footedness and alpine experience. On the summit visitors find a wide grassy plateau with views across the Kleinwalsertal and the Allgäuer Alps. The steep north-east walls give dramatic contrasts to the gentle southern slopes. Nearby peaks such as the Hochstarzel and the Steinmandl frame the horizon.
