Hochstarzel

The Hochstarzel is a grassy summit of Flysch rock in the Allgäuer Alps of Vorarlberg. It stands at 1,974 metres as a lesser peak of the Güntlespitze, framed by the Baader range west of the Kleinwalsertal valley. The mountain lies between the Grünhorn to the south and the main Güntlespitze to the north. Its slopes support a rich variety of mountain flora. Climbers reach the top by narrow paths from either the Derrenjoch in the south or the Starzeljoch in the north. Both cols can be approached from the Kleinwalsertal in the north or from Schoppernau and the Hochtannberg Pass in the south. The route from the Starzeljoch includes exposed sections secured with fixed ropes, so a sure foot and head for heights are required. On the summit visitors find open grassland and sweeping views across the Allgäuer Alps. The surrounding peaks of the Baader range frame the horizon, while the Kleinwalsertal valley stretches below. The flora changes with the seasons, offering colour from spring through autumn. The paths are quiet, used mainly by hikers and mountaineers.
