St Peter's Church, Petersham

St Peter’s Church stands in the village of Petersham, beside the busy A307 road in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The building’s main body dates from the 16th century, while parts of the chancel survive from the 13th century and there may have been a church on the site in Saxon times. Nikolaus Pevsner and Bridget Cherry praised its ‘uncommon charm’ and noted that the interior remains well preserved in its pre-Victorian state. The church is Grade II* listed and holds Georgian box pews, a two-decker pulpit made in 1796, and a Hanoverian royal arms relief installed in 1810. A modern classical organ was added at the south end in 2009, and a parish room was built in 2018. The churchyard contains several Grade II-listed tombs. The church has witnessed notable marriages over the centuries. Prince Rupert of the Rhine wed Lady Francesca Bard here in 1664, and the Duchess of Lauderdale married her second husband in 1672. In 1718 Lady Jane Hyde married William Capell, 3rd Earl of Essex, and in 1881 Claude Bowes-Lyon, Lord Glamis, married Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck; their daughter later became Queen Elizabeth. Inside, memorials remember figures such as the explorer George Vancouver and Captain John Niel Randle VC. The churchyard graves include the playwright Lodowick Carlell and his wife Joan Carlile, the painter of Petersham Lodge. Visitors find a quiet interior of plain white walls, box pews and a pulpit reached by a narrow staircase. The Hanoverian royal arms hangs above the chancel arch, and the modern organ stands at the south end. The churchyard holds weathered headstones and grand tombs, including that of Captain George Vancouver. A plaque marks the Petersham Boy Scouts who died in the First World War, moved from the old All Saints’ Church. The surrounding village retains its leafy lanes and views across the Thames valley.
