Church of St Matthias

St Matthias Church stands at the top of Richmond Hill where Friars Stile Road, Kings Road and Church Road meet. Built in 1857 in the Victorian Gothic style, it is the grandest church in Richmond according to architectural historians Bridget Cherry and Nikolaus Pevsner. The architect was George Gilbert Scott, who designed many notable churches across Britain. A tall spire rises 59 metres above the hilltop, making the church a landmark visible for miles around. The church is dedicated to Saint Matthias, chosen by the apostles to replace Judas Iscariot. It is part of the Richmond Team Ministry alongside St John the Divine and St Mary Magdalene. The church’s interior reflects its Victorian Gothic design with pointed arches and intricate stonework. In the 1970s, architects Hutchison, Locke & Monk carried out a careful renovation to preserve its character. The building is Grade II listed, recognising its architectural and historical importance. The Acts of Apostles provides the story of Saint Matthias, linking the church to early Christian tradition. Its hilltop position offers sweeping views over Richmond and the surrounding area. Visitors find a quiet sanctuary at the top of the hill, away from the busy roads below. The church’s stone exterior and tall spire dominate the skyline of Richmond.
