Steinfalk

Steinfalk is a 2,347-metre summit in the Falken Group, part of the Karwendel range in Tyrol. The mountain stands above the Eng Valley, a quiet glacial trough that opens south of Innsbruck. The Falken Hut sits halfway up, offering the only practical base for an ascent. From the hut a marked alpine route climbs over grass and rock to the top. The final section includes short scrambling moves graded UIAA I, which most fit walkers can manage. Compared with other peaks in the group, Steinfalk is the easiest to reach. Only the normal route to Mahnkopf is simpler. The climb totals about 1,200 metres of ascent from the valley floor. Walkers usually start early to avoid afternoon storms that build over the peaks. The route passes through alpine pastures where marmots whistle and edelweiss grows in cracks. The summit ridge gives a narrow crest with drop-offs on both sides. On clear days the view stretches from the Zugspitze in Germany to the Dolomites in Italy. The summit cross is a modest steel cross, bolted to the highest block. From the top the eye follows the chain of the Karwendel towards the north. To the south the Eng Valley curves away, its steep walls patterned with avalanche paths. The descent retraces the ascent route, so the same landmarks guide the way down. The Falken Hut remains open through the summer season, serving hearty Tyrolean dishes after a day on the hill. The stone-built refuge blends into the slope, its small windows framing views of the peaks above.
