Vomp lies in the Lower Inn Valley in Tyrol, about thirty kilometres east of Innsbruck. The market town extends from the Inn river in the south up into the Karwendel range in the north, where it borders on Germany. With an area of more than 180 square kilometres, it is one of the largest municipalities in the Schwaz district and sits at an elevation of around 560 metres. Five villages belong to the municipal area, including the remote settlement of Hinterriß, which can only be reached from Bavaria.
Vomp was first mentioned in the early tenth century under the name “Fonapa” in a deed issued by the Archbishopric of Salzburg. The place name probably derives from a pre-Roman term. Over the centuries the spelling changed until “Vomp” finally became established. In 2009 the municipality was granted market-town status, although it had long been an important settlement in the Inn Valley.
Notable sights include the Baroque collegiate church of the Benedictine monastery at Fiecht, which moved to its present site after several fires. The former hunting lodge of Sigmundslust recalls the region’s hunting traditions. A natural monument is the Great Maple Ground, with its trees that are centuries old. The municipality maintains partnerships with places in France and Bavaria and houses the headquarters of the Grail Movement on Vomperberg.
