Risser Falk

The Risser Falk stands in the Karwendel range, a chain of limestone peaks in the Austrian Alps. It rises to 2,413 metres above sea level in the Falkengruppe, a subgroup of the Karwendel. The mountain’s northern walls drop steeply into the Rißtal valley, while its southern flanks slope more gently toward the Eng valley. The summit is often called the Große Falk, a name used in older guides. From the valley floor the peak looks like a sharp pyramid against the sky. Climbers value the Risser Falk for its solid rock and varied routes. The South Ridge offers a technical climb graded II, with short sections of scrambling on firm limestone. A longer but easier route starts at Eng village, passes the Falkenhütte at 1,848 metres, and crosses the Ladizjöchl col before joining the South Ridge. Both ways lead to the Grüne-Rinn-Scharte at 2,290 metres, a narrow col with views across the Karwendel. From the col the final climb follows the South Ridge to the summit block. The last metres involve some exposed moves on clean rock. Those who prefer a longer approach can traverse the Steinfalk’s North-West Ridge before turning north into the Talelekirchkar. The descent usually returns the same way, passing the Falkenhütte for refreshments. The whole tour shows the wild heart of the Karwendel, where ridges and valleys form a landscape of sharp edges and quiet hollows.
