Carnedd gron Craig y Bwlch

Carnedd gron Craig y Bwlch is a round cairn on Hirwaun Common in Rhondda Cynon Taf. It dates from the end of the Stone Age and the start of the Bronze Age. The cairn sits on a hilltop, surrounded by open moorland and distant views. Its purpose was likely linked to burial rituals and religious ceremonies. Cadw has registered the site as a scheduled monument, giving it special protection. The builders of this cairn also constructed other ancient structures nearby. These include burial chambers, mounds, stone circles, hill forts, Irish huts and standing stones. The round cairn is different from a ring cairn, which has a distinct circular shape. Its simple form contrasts with the more complex designs of other Neolithic sites. Visitors reach the cairn by walking across Hirwaun Common. The path is clear but exposed, with no shelter along the way. From the summit, the wide landscape stretches out in every direction. The cairn itself is a low, grass-covered mound of stones. It stands as a quiet reminder of the people who lived thousands of years ago.
