Garn Bica

Garn Bica is a round cairn in the Rhondda Cynon Taf county, near the community of Y Maerdy. It stands on high ground marked by the grid reference SN942005. The site dates from the late Stone Age into the early Bronze Age. Its purpose was likely tied to burial rites and religious ceremonies. Cadw has registered the monument under the unique SAM number GM539. The builders of Garn Bica also constructed other ancient sites. These include chambered tombs, burial mounds, stone circles, hillforts, Irish huts and standing stones. The cairn reflects the practices of the people who lived in the area thousands of years ago. Visitors find a grassy mound surrounded by open moorland. The setting offers wide views across the Rhondda valleys. The site is quiet and remote, with few modern distractions. It provides a sense of the landscape as it appeared in prehistoric times. The cairn itself is a simple but striking reminder of the region’s ancient past.
