Carnedd gron Rhondda Fach

Carnedd gron Rhondda Fach is a round cairn near Rhigos in Rhondda Cynon Taf. It dates from the late Neolithic to the early Bronze Age. The site sits on a ridge overlooking the Rhondda Fach valley. Its builders used local stones to pile up the mound. Round cairns like this one served ceremonial and burial purposes. They differ from ring cairns, which have a stone circle around the edge. Cadw has listed the cairn as an ancient monument. It carries the SAM number GM541. The same Neolithic and Bronze Age people also raised chambered tombs, burial mounds, stone circles, hill forts, Irish huts and standing stones. These remains show how these communities marked their landscape. Visitors reach the cairn along a short path from the road. The ridge gives wide views over the valley and the surrounding hills. The mound itself is grass-covered and about two metres high. Its simple shape and quiet setting let the ancient structure speak for itself. No modern distractions spoil the view of the valley below.
