Burg Hohenkressberg

The ruins of Hohenkressberg Castle stand on the 511-metre Kreßberg hill in the village of Hohenkreßberg, part of the municipality of Kreßberg. Built in the 13th century by the Lords of Kreßberg, the first written record appears around 1303, followed by mentions in 1333 and 1345. The castle changed hands several times before Ulrich von Knöringen purchased the estate in 1545. A fire destroyed the structure in 1648, and by 1723 a wayside chapel had been erected in the former defensive ditch. The medieval stronghold once featured a neck ditch, an outer rampart and a wet moat to guard its approach. Archaeologists have traced these earthworks and the chapel’s foundations in later surveys. Alois Schneider’s 1995 study of Hall district castles devotes pages to the site’s development and afterlife. The hilltop still shows traces of the Halsgraben and the surrounding wall lines. Visitors reach the ruins along quiet woodland paths that climb from the village. The chapel’s low walls and the scattered stones of the keep stand against a backdrop of mixed forest. From the hilltop there are long views across the Hohenlohe plain. The site is quiet, with only the wind and birds breaking the stillness.
