Schloss Wildenstein (Fichtenau)

Schloss Wildenstein stands in the small village of Wildenstein, part of Fichtenau near Crailsheim in the Schwäbisch Hall district of Baden-Württemberg. The three-winged building dates from the 16th century, with stair turrets and gables added in the 17th and 18th centuries. Four corner towers were removed in the 19th century. In 1662 the castle passed from the von Knöringen family to the Hofer von Lobenstein barons, who had left their estates at Burg Lobenstein in Zell because of their Protestant faith. The family name Hofer comes from their ancestral seat, Burg Hof am Regen. The castle is known for local ghost stories that have circulated for generations. Alois Schneider’s book on castles in the Schwäbisch Hall district describes the building in detail. Hasso von Haldenwang’s work recalls the Jenische travelling traders who once lived around Wildenstein. The Hofer von Lobenstein family archive, kept at the State Archives in Ludwigsburg, preserves records of the estate’s history. Visitors find a three-winged Renaissance structure with later Baroque stair features. The remaining walls and towers show the castle’s changing shape over centuries. The surrounding village preserves the quiet atmosphere of rural Hohenlohe. Nearby fields and woods stretch towards Crailsheim. The castle’s archive and ghost tales add layers of history and legend to the site.
