Burgstall Wüstenau

The Burgstall Wüstenau stands on the Schlossberg, a 515-metre hill near Wüstenau in Kreßberg. It was once a hilltop castle built around 1251 on the site then called Burgberg. The counts of Flügelau may have granted the castle to their vassals between 1251 and 1305. Little remains of the original structure today. Only the earthen mound of the former keep and a fragment of the defensive ditch survive. Archaeologists recognise these remnants as part of a larger medieval fortification. Visitors reach the site along quiet woodland paths that climb the Schlossberg. The gentle slope offers views over the surrounding countryside. The remains themselves are simple grassy mounds and a shallow trench, but they mark the spot where a castle once stood. The peaceful setting contrasts with the castle’s vanished past.
