Stirling Smith Museum and Art Gallery

The Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum stands in King’s Park, a once fashionable residential area north of Stirling’s old town. The building opened in 1874 as the Smith Institute, founded by artist Thomas Stuart Smith to house his collection. It sits on Dumbarton Road, separated from the medieval town wall until a new road was cut in the early 20th century. The site was controversial when chosen, drawing a petition of 1,400 signatures. Locals resented the loss of a museum in the old town and the need to cross the wall. Provost Christie defended the choice, calling it quiet and clean for study. The museum’s early years were shaped by curator Alexander Croall, a self-taught naturalist famed for his work on seaweeds. Croall organised exhibitions with Stirling High School and helped found the Stirling Field Club. His successor, James Sword, expanded the history and antiquities collections and improved the grounds. Between 1881 and 1938, the Stirling Fine Art Association held triennial exhibitions featuring leading Scottish artists such as Cadell, McTaggart and Anne Redpath. The events included lectures and concerts, often organised by Adam R. Lennox. During both world wars the building was taken over by the military and suffered serious damage. Paintings were crammed into side rooms while troops occupied the main galleries. Live ammunition was later found in Gallery Three, left behind after training exercises. After 1947 the museum slowly recovered under curator Joseph McNaughton, who published a catalogue of the collections in 1934. Today the galleries display the legacy of these decades, from natural history to fine art.
