Leum Uilleim

Leum Uilleim is a mountain summit in the Grampians range, set between Fort William and Loch Leven in the Highland region of Scotland. It stands among the wild landscapes of Lochaber, where the peaks rise above moorland and lochans. A small cairn marks the highest point, a simple stone heap left by walkers. The mountain sits on private land, yet the footpaths cross open ground that feels remote and unspoilt. Its grid reference places it north-west of the main A82 road, far from towns and villages. The slopes are gentle enough for a steady climb, with no technical scrambling required. The peak is known in hill-walking circles for its inclusion in several important lists. It is classed as a Marilyn, a Corbett, a Murdo and a HuMP, each term describing its height or its relative prominence. Organisations such as the Database of British and Irish Hills maintain these lists, checking measurements and updating records. The last precise survey of Leum Uilleim was carried out in October 2001, confirming its place among recognised summits. Walkers who reach the top often record their ascent on the same database. The mountain’s Gaelic name survives in local use, linking it to the language of the Highlands. A visitor finds a quiet summit with wide views across the surrounding glens. To the east the eye follows the line of the A82 towards Glencoe, while to the west the peaks of Glen Nevis appear. The air is clear on fine days, letting distant ridges stand out against the sky. The climb itself passes through heather and grass, with no forest to block the horizon. On the descent the walker returns the same way, the cairn growing smaller behind. The mountain offers no shelter or facilities, only space and silence.
