Burg Freiberg

Burg Freiberg is a ruined castle above the village of Dellach in the Gail valley, Carinthia. It stands on a rocky spur at 750 metres, commanding views down the valley and across to the Gailtal Alps. The first written mention dates from 1181, placing its origins in the 12th century. The castle was built to guard a key route between the Alps and the Adriatic. Over the centuries it passed through several noble families. By the 17th century it had fallen into disuse and ruin. The castle’s long history is visible in its two baileys and the remains of a keep. The outer bailey still shows sections of the enceinte wall and a round tower. Inside the inner bailey stand the remnants of the great hall and a cistern cut from rock. Archaeologists have dated the masonry to the 12th and 13th centuries. The site offers a clear picture of medieval fortification techniques. Visitors walk along a short path from the village car park to the base of the spur. A steep climb leads to the outer gate and then to the inner ward. From the keep’s foundations there are wide views over the valley and surrounding peaks. The ruins stand quietly among beech and pine, with only the wind and birds breaking the silence.
