Pfarrkirche hl. Georg, Obermühlbach

The Catholic parish church of St George stands in the village of Obermühlbach, part of the municipality of Frauenstein in the district of St Veit an der Glan, Carinthia. It is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint George and belongs to the deanery of St Veit an der Glan in the Diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt. The church and its churchyard are listed as a historic monument. The church began as an old parish of Gurk in 1072 or 1131. Its Gothic structure from the 15th century was later transformed in the Baroque style. The former Gothic tower was replaced by a Baroque sacristy, and the powerful Baroque west tower was altered after 1759. A major restoration took place in 1998. Inside, the nave and choir are barely separated, the choir covered with stone slabs. A niche near the west entrance holds Gothic railings. The Baroque west tower stands on four pillars and features blind windows and plaster decoration. The interior has a nave under a Baroque barrel vault with lunettes. The Baroque gallery shows stucco panels on its railing. The broad semi-circular triumphal arch is Gothic at its core. The single-bay choir ends in a five-sided apse with a Gothic but Baroque-style vault on corbels. A shoulder-arched Gothic door leads into the north sacristy. Outside, the western wall contains reused Roman-era grave reliefs, some depicting plants and figures, including what may be Attis and a maenad.
