Rothschild Hospital

The Rothschild-Spital was a hospital founded by Baron Anselm von Rothschild in Vienna. It opened in 1873 as part of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde and served the city for decades. The building stood on Währinger Gürtel 97 and was designed by architect Wilhelm Stiassny. After World War II, it became a hospital for displaced persons, at one point housing up to 600 refugees. The hospital closed in 1943 under Nazi rule. The original hospital building was demolished in 1960 and replaced by a new structure. This new building now houses the WIFI University, which offers courses in economics, languages and social sciences. The university provides certificates and degrees in related fields. The site remains an important educational centre in Vienna. Visitors to the area will find a modern university building in place of the former hospital.
