Währinger Straße-Volksoper

The station Währinger Straße–Volksoper stands on the Währinger Gürtel in Vienna’s ninth district, Alsergrund, near the border with Währing. It is an elevated structure built for the former Stadtbahn and now serves the U6 line. The address is Währinger Gürtel 104A, between Währinger Straße and Gentzgasse. Designed by Otto Wagner and opened in 1898, the building reflects late 19th-century style with classical motifs. It was closed during the First World War coal shortage, reopened in 1925 for electric Stadtbahn services, and converted for U6 trains in 1989. The name ‘Volksoper’ was added in 1939 after the city took over the nearby opera house. The station retains its original decoration, including sculpted lion heads and a barrel-vaulted entrance hall lined with facing bricks. Two staircases lead down to the platforms, which were extended in the 1980s to accommodate longer trains. Outside, green swing doors and broad stone staircases mark the entrances. A Billa supermarket occupies part of the northern building, while a stage workshop and ticket booth sit beside the western exit.
