Mamores

The Mamores form a ridge of rugged peaks in the Scottish Highlands, stretching about fifteen kilometres between Glen Nevis and Loch Leven. Ten of the summits qualify as Munros, each rising above 900 metres. The ridge runs east–west, with the highest point at Binnein Mòr at 1,128 metres. Three narrow ridges branch north from the main crest to Sgurr a’ Mhàim, An Gearanach and Binnein Mòr. Two further peaks, Binnein Beag and Sgurr Eilde Mòr, stand apart beyond the eastern end. For hillwalkers the Mamores offer routes from both sides of the ridge. Kinlochleven lies on the southern flank, while upper Glen Nevis provides access from the north. A full ridge traverse is a serious challenge, suited to experienced walkers over several days. Shorter outings combine peaks such as Sgurr a’ Mhàim and Am Bodach. The best-known circuit is the Ring of Steall, a day-long walk above Steall Falls that takes in four Munros. On the ground the walker finds steep-sided corries, narrow arêtes and wide views across Glen Nevis and Loch Leven. The Ring of Steall route climbs past Steall Falls, crosses ridges and descends beside the Allt Coire a’ Chàirn. From the summits there are long sightlines to Ben Nevis and the surrounding ranges. The open plateau of the main ridge contrasts with the steep gullies on its flanks.
