Käsplatte

The Käsplatte is a minor mountain 979 metres high in the Bavarian Forest. It stands two kilometres north of the Pröller, between the villages of Prackenbach, Kollnburg and St. Englmar. The slightly lower Hanichelriegel lies four hundred metres to the east. Several waymarked paths lead to the summit, including routes from Ahornwies, Münchshöfen and Kolmberg. The summit surprises walkers with a rare sight. Like the Lusen nearby, the mountain is covered with hundreds of granite boulders. From these rocks there are clear views north and west over the surrounding countryside. The blockfield is recognised as an important geological site by the Bavarian Environment Agency. It covers sixty thousand square metres and formed during the Pleistocene epoch. Visitors reach the top by following the marked trails to the granite blocks. The rocks lie scattered across the summit plateau, offering open sightlines across the forest canopy. The contrast between the pale boulders and the dark woodland makes the place striking. The silence here is natural, broken only by wind and birdsong.
