Pröller

The Pröller is a 1,049-metre mountain in the Bavarian Forest near St. Englmar and Kollnburg. It stands where the counties of Lower Bavaria and Upper Palatinate meet, with open slopes that once gave wide views. Old photographs from the first summit cross ceremony in 1923 show the bare summit that once stretched south and west. The mountain is owned by the Straubing section of the Bavarian Forest Club, who installed the first summit cross in 1923. In winter its lifts on the west, north and east faces make it one of the region’s leading ski resorts. The Prädikatswanderweg Goldsteig crosses the summit plateau between Hinterwies and the St 2139 road pass. Walkers can start at Hinterwies and follow the forest edge then the ski piste to the top. The reverse route begins at a car park north of St. Englmar, climbs a forest track and then crosses steeper, rockier ground. From the summit there are views east across the High Bogen, Kaitersberg, Osser and Great Arber to the Rachel.
