Lan Fawr round cairns

Llan Fawr round cairns stand on a ridge above the Teifi valley in Ceredigion. They are two Bronze Age burial mounds, built about 4,000 years ago. The larger cairn is nearly 20 metres across and still rises over a metre high. The smaller one lies 30 metres to the north-east and measures about 12 metres wide. Both sit on open moorland with wide views over rolling hills. Their purpose was probably religious, linked to ceremonies for the dead. They belong to a group of monuments that includes chambered tombs, standing stones and hilltop forts. Cadw recognises them as part of Wales’ ancient heritage and lists them under a single record number. Visitors reach the cairns along a grassy track from the minor road. The ground is uneven and can be boggy after rain. From the ridge there are long views north to the Cambrian Mountains and south to the coastal hills. The site is quiet, with only the wind and skylarks for company.
