Carnedd gron Crug, Llanddewi Brefi

Carnedd gron Crug stands on a low ridge above the village of Llanddewi Brefi in Ceredigion. This round cairn dates from the late Stone Age and the start of the Bronze Age. Its builders placed it where the land rises gently toward the west. The site sits at grid reference SN668531 on Ordnance Survey maps. Round cairns served as part of burial rituals and ceremonies for the dead. They differ from ring cairns, which have a surrounding stone circle. Cadw recognises Carnedd gron Crug as a scheduled ancient monument under number CD223. The same Neolithic and Bronze Age people who built this cairn also raised chambered tombs, burial mounds, stone circles, hill forts, Irish huts and standing stones. These monuments stretch across the Welsh uplands. Their makers left no written records, so every cairn is a clue to vanished beliefs. Visitors reach the cairn by a farm track that climbs from the village. The mound itself is grass-covered and roughly circular, about ten metres wide. From its rim the view opens over rolling fields and distant hills. The quiet spot holds few visitors, so the silence and the wind are the main sounds. The cairn’s stones lie scattered yet still form a low ring under the turf.
