Denkmal der Schlacht bei Wagram

The war memorial on Erzherzog Carl-Straße commemorates the Battle of Wagram of 5 and 6 July 1809. It was built for the centenary: the foundation stone was laid on 6 July 1908, the monument unveiled on 4 July 1909. The sculptor was Franz Seifert. A four-part stone obelisk bearing the year 1809 rises from a terraced granite base, crowned by a zinc eagle with outstretched wings. In front of it a grenadier of the 42nd Infantry Regiment raises his colours beside a dying infantryman, both encircled by a laurel wreath. The inscription reads: "To the heroes of the Battle of Deutsch-Wagram, erected in eternal memory in the year 1909." The site was chosen deliberately. The memorial stands in the so-called Sachsenklemme between Franz-Mair-Straße and Rohrergasse, where the Saxon troops under Marshal Bernadotte were caught in the heaviest fighting. Fifty years earlier, in 1859, the memorial chapel had been built for the first anniversary.
