Haughley Castle

Haughley Castle is a medieval earthwork fortress in the village of Haughley, 4 kilometres north-west of Stowmarket in Suffolk. Built in the late 11th century by Hugh de Montfort, it follows a motte-and-bailey design with a large mound and a rectangular outer enclosure. The motte measures 64 metres across at the base and rises to about 12 metres, surrounded by a deep wet moat fed by a diverted stream. A rectangular bailey, 120 metres by 91 metres, lies to the west, entered through a single gateway. The site once included a stone shell keep on the motte, though its foundations have disappeared. Historians such as J. Wall and R. Allen Brown rank Haughley Castle among the finest and most important earthwork castles in East Anglia. It served as the main stronghold of the Honour of Haughley, obliging its owners to provide soldiers for Dover Castle. Hugh de Montfort gave the castle to Henry of Essex, who lost it after being accused of cowardice in battle. Henry II later seized it from the Bigod family during a regional power struggle. In 1173 the castle withstood a siege led by Robert de Beaumont, Earl of Leicester, before being rebuilt and later dismantled in the 18th century. Visitors today see a scheduled monument of grassy earthworks and circular stone foundations more than two and a half metres thick. A 2011 excavation uncovered extensive foundations and fragments of carved stone, revealing the castle’s former scale. The site is quiet, with the village church standing nearby, hinting at the castle’s former role in local defence. A major event in 2023 marked the 850th anniversary of the siege with talks, a book launch and a re-enactment. The landscape still carries the shape of the motte, bailey and moat, offering a clear view of a medieval fortress in the Suffolk countryside.
