Church of St Peter and St Mary

The Church of St Peter and St Mary stands in the centre of Stowmarket, a market town in Suffolk. Built in the 14th century, it is a Grade I listed building and remains an active parish church. The church’s name reflects a late-medieval merger of two earlier churches, one dedicated to Saint Peter and the other to Saint Mary. Tree-ring dating shows the spire’s timbers were felled between 1362 and 1363, while the main body of the church dates from the same period. The tower was added later, and the building was restored several times during the 19th century. The spire has been rebuilt repeatedly, most recently in 1994 after earlier replacements. The church contains memorials to local people who died in the First and Second World Wars. Among its notable past figures is Thomas Young, a 17th-century vicar and tutor to John Milton, who is buried here. The interior was heavily restored in the mid-19th century by Richard Phipson, architect to the Diocese of Norwich. James Bettley, in the Pevsner Buildings of England series, highlights the many memorials to the Tyrrell family, prominent local landowners. The spire was removed in 1975 due to instability but a timber replacement was installed in 1993–1994, designed to echo earlier forms. Inside, the church is built of local flint with ashlar stone dressings and features a four-storey tower topped with a crenellated parapet. The interior follows the Decorated Gothic style and includes an external gallery on the spire. Regular services continue to be held, keeping the church a living part of the community. Visitors can see the large number of historic memorials and the careful craftsmanship of the 19th-century restoration. The building’s layered history is visible in its architecture, from medieval timbers to Victorian repairs. The surroundings remain centred on the town, where the church has stood for centuries.
