Food Museum

The Food Museum sits on an 84-acre estate in Stowmarket, Suffolk, made up of 17 historic buildings. The land once belonged to St Osyth’s Priory in Essex and later passed through several owners before being donated in stages from 1967. The museum began with a medieval barn and a small plot of land, growing over decades to include farmhouses, cottages and industrial buildings. Abbot’s Hall, a Grade II* listed house, forms the heart of the site, surrounded by gardens and farmland. A 14th-century farmhouse from Combs and an 18th-century watermill were carefully moved here to save them from destruction. The estate also features a 19th-century windpump and workers’ cottages kept as they were left in the 20th century. The museum is worth visiting for its deep ties to East Anglia’s rural past and food traditions. It holds collections of farming tools, agricultural engines and a working printing press in the Boby Building. Exhibitions explore life in the region, including the work of folklorist George Ewart Evans. The site runs daily talks, cooking workshops and family activities focused on food production. Annual events include a Festival of Beer and Brewing, a literature festival and a living history fair. The museum’s development has restored historic structures like the Alton Watermill and Eastbridge Windpump to working order. Visitors find nine exhibition spaces in Abbot’s Hall, each examining ideas of home and belonging. The Crowe Street Cottages show how workers lived in the early 20th century. The William Bone Gallery hosts changing exhibitions and a demonstration kitchen. The Medieval Barn and Farm Barn display farming equipment and host activities. The site includes a restored watermill and windpump, both still in working condition. Paths wind through farmland and gardens, offering views of the estate’s varied buildings. Events and workshops take place throughout the year, making the museum a lively place to explore.
