Pleasure Beach Resort

Pleasure Beach Resort stands on Blackpool’s South Shore in Lancashire, a large amusement park beside the Irish Sea. Founded in 1896 by A. W. G. Bean and John Outhwaite, it grew from a few roundabouts on the sand dunes into a 42-acre site along the promenade. The park still surrounds the old Switchback roller coaster, built in 1891 before the park existed. Sir Hiram Maxim’s Captive Flying Machine, opened in 1904, remains one of Europe’s oldest rides. The Casino Building, designed by Joseph Emberton in the 1930s, now houses the ticket centre and function rooms. The park holds many British records, including four wooden roller coasters. Big One, opened in 1994, was once the world’s tallest and steepest ride. Revolution was Europe’s first inverting steel coaster, and Valhalla is one of the largest indoor dark rides. Grand National is one of only two wooden Möbius loop coasters still running. The park also operates Nickelodeon Land for younger visitors. Visitors find wide paths lined with bright rides and themed areas. Wooden coasters twist above the ground while steel tracks carry trains at speed. Indoor attractions like Valhalla plunge riders into darkness. The Casino Building’s Art Deco style frames the entrance, and older rides such as the Captive Flying Machine still turn beside newer thrills. The sea breeze mixes with the sounds of laughter and screams from the coasters.
