Loch Shin

Loch Shin lies in the far north-west of the Highlands, a long ribbon of dark water stretching twenty-seven kilometres between hills. It is Sutherland’s largest loch and runs from north-west to south-east, its banks bordered by mountains that rise almost a thousand metres above the surface. To the south-west stands Ben More Assynt at 998 metres, while to the east Ben Klibreck reaches 961 metres. A short river, the Shin, carries the loch’s water to the Dornoch Firth and the North Sea. Nearby Lairg is the nearest town, a small settlement of white houses beside the water’s edge. The loch was reshaped in the 1950s when Lairg Dam was built by Wimpey Construction as part of a hydro-electric scheme. The water level rose by more than nine metres, flooding the original shoreline and creating the broad expanse seen today. The scheme brought power to remote glens and added a new stretch of water to the map. Around the loch, sheep graze on the lower slopes while the higher hills remain wild and uninhabited. A monument three miles north of Lairg recalls an early attempt to tame the Highlands, a reminder of the area’s past. Visitors find a quiet landscape where the water reflects the surrounding peaks on calm days. The road that follows the eastern shore offers views across the loch to Ben Klibreck’s slopes. In summer, the hillsides are dotted with white dots of grazing sheep. The water is home to brown trout and occasional salmon, drawing anglers in season. At the southern end, Lairg provides a place to rest before continuing north along single-track roads. The monument to the north stands as a quiet witness to the region’s history.
