Falls of Shin

The Falls of Shin is a waterfall on the River Shin in northern Scotland, close to the villages of Bonar Bridge and Lairg. The surrounding area is part of Balnagown Estates, once owned by Mohamed Al-Fayed. A visitor centre once stood here, featuring a restaurant, a Harrods branch and a waxwork of Al-Fayed. It was destroyed by fire in 2013 and rebuilt by William Gray Construction. The new centre opened in 2017 with support from the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust. The cafe is now run by Mac & Wild, whose founders also operate restaurants in London. The falls were dynamited to help salmon move upstream more easily. A Salmon Viewing Platform lets visitors watch the fish leap against the current. Woodland walks wind through the estate’s trees, while a mini golf course and a large playpark provide activities for families. The site blends natural beauty with man-made attractions. Its location near Bonar Bridge makes it easy to reach from the A9 road. The river and surrounding hills form a quiet Highland landscape. Visitors find a mix of water, woodland and open space. The Salmon Viewing Platform offers a clear view of the falls and the fish below. Families can let children play in the adventure playground or try the mini golf course. The cafe serves food and drink with views of the river. Short woodland paths lead to quieter spots away from the main buildings. The whole site sits within a working Highland estate, giving a sense of rural life. It remains a place where nature and leisure meet.
