Gaiety Theatre, Ayr

The Gaiety Theatre stands in Ayr, a town on Scotland’s west coast. It is a Category B listed building, built in 1902 and rebuilt after fires in 1904 and 1955. The façade was remodelled in the 1930s, and an annex added in 1995 with a café and studio space. Inside, rococo plasterwork, warm lighting and careful acoustics create an intimate atmosphere. The theatre has been run by local charities since 2012, relying largely on volunteers for front-of-house and technical work. For fifty years the Popplewell family managed the Gaiety, turning it into a popular variety house with the long-running Gaiety Whirl. Stars such as Scottish and UK performers appeared on its stage, and many started their careers there. After council ownership from 1974, the programme grew to include Shakespeare, Citizens Theatre transfers, pantomime and even controversial shows like Dario Fo’s Mistero Buffo. When the theatre closed in 2009, local opposition was strong, and a community charity secured a 99-year lease to reopen it. Visitors find a restored auditorium with ornate balconies and plush seats, a café in the annex, and a studio used for rehearsals and classes. The theatre now hosts the annual panto, touring productions, and learning programmes run with the University of the West of Scotland. Students train in technical theatre on site, while local volunteers help run performances and events. The foyer often holds displays about the building’s history and the acts that have played there.
