Auld Kirk of Ayr

The Auld Kirk of Ayr stands beside the River Ayr in the heart of the town. Built of sandstone in the 17th century, it shows clear Gothic lines: pointed windows with delicate tracery and stained glass filled with Christian scenes. A T-shaped plan and slate roofs complete the simple yet striking silhouette. The church owes its existence to Colonel Alured, who led the fundraising after Cromwell’s troops took the nearby St John’s Kirk. Designed by Theophilus Rankeine, it rose quickly between 1652 and 1654. Later architects, including David Bryce in 1836 and the 1864 renovators, kept the interior fresh while preserving the original stonework. Inside, the nave holds carved wooden pews arranged around a central aisle. Outside, the 1656 lychgate shelters visitors before they step into the graveyard. Its square stone shell, elliptical arch and iron gate frame a quiet threshold between town and memorial ground.
