Ayr Cathedral

The Cathedral Church of Saint Margaret stands in Ayr, a town on Scotland’s west coast. Built in the early 19th century, it became the city’s Roman Catholic cathedral in 2007 after the former Good Shepherd Cathedral closed. The building serves as the seat of the Bishop of Galloway and the mother church of the Diocese of Galloway. Its exterior is plain, while inside it holds a white-painted sanctuary with modern furnishings. The cathedral also preserves two books placed beneath the high altar: a Book of Dedication and a Book of Remembrance. These volumes record the names of parishioners past and present, along with those remembered. The cathedral’s history reflects both growth and renewal. Designed by James Dempster, it opened in 1827 to serve a growing Catholic population. In the 1960s and 1970s it was remodelled after the Second Vatican Council, turning the sanctuary to face the congregation. By the mid-1990s serious problems appeared: water leaks, damp, corroded windows and worn wiring. Father Martin McCluskey began planning repairs but died before work could start. His successor, Father Patrick Keegans, secured grants from Heritage Scotland and the National Lottery to fund a full renovation. The project included new stained glass, an organ, sacristy and central heating. Inside, visitors find a bright, spacious nave with a gallery at the west end. The two stained-glass windows behind the gallery use a repeating pattern so that the design appears complete even where the gallery blocks part of it. The sanctuary was completely refurbished in the late 1990s, with a white ceiling and walls, new lighting and a central aisle. The high altar stands above the two signed books, marking the cathedral’s long connection to the community. Outside, the building sits among the streets of Ayr, its simple form a quiet presence in the town centre.
