Karlstein

The Karlstein is a mountain in the Hochschwab range of the Austrian Alps, standing at 2,016 metres. It sits on the central plateau of the Hochschwab group, separated from the higher Hochwart by a shallow saddle called the Kleine Speikboden. To the north, the terrain drops steeply into the Antengraben valley through two rock faces, the Weißenbachwand and Weißenbachmauer, creating a drop of about 1,300 metres. The summit is a flat, grassy dome with two ridges extending from it. One ridge leads northwest to a notable outcrop called Karlkögerl, ending in a large rock formation sometimes called Goldstein. The other ridge, the Weichselriegel, slopes southwest into a karst hollow. The Hochschwab group belongs to the Northern Limestone Alps, with the Karlstein formed from Wettersteinkalk limestone typical of the region. The summit itself is made of reef facies of this limestone, while Wettersteindolomit appears to the north and east. South of the summit lies a karst depression exposing rocks from the Sonnschien and Werfener formations. The area is part of the Mürzalpendecke, a tectonic unit within the Eastern Alps. The Hochschwab plateau is largely unmarked by paths, and the Karlstein is not accessible via official trails. Below the Karlstein, at about 1,600 metres, lies the abandoned Hochalm in a basin dotted with mountain pines. The nearest marked route runs along the Hochschwab plateau between Zinken and Hochwart, from which a short unmarked climb leads to the summit. The surrounding landscape features rugged rock faces, karst hollows and open grassy slopes. Views extend across the plateau and down into the steep valleys of the Salza tributaries. The contrast between the flat summit and the dramatic drops on either side makes the Karlstein a striking but little-visited peak.
