Hochschwab Mountains

The Hochschwab is a limestone mountain range in the Northern Limestone Alps of Austria, situated in the eastern part of the Northern Alps within the state of Styria. The range covers about 400 square kilometres and is bounded by the Salza, Mur and Enns rivers, with the Seeberg Saddle and Präbichl pass marking its eastern and western edges. The highest point, also called Hochschwab, reaches 2,277 metres. The massif includes prominent peaks such as Ringkamp, Ebenstein and Hochturm, as well as lower foothills like the Aflenzer Staritzen and Zeller Staritzen. The northern perimeter features gentler mountains such as Ilgner Alpl and Aflenzer Bürgeralm, while the southern prealps include Polster, Pribitz and Meßnerin. The Hochschwab is worth visiting for its dramatic limestone landscapes and extensive alpine terrain. The region is home to several alpine huts maintained by the Austrian Alpine Club and Austrian Tourist Club, including the Schiestlhaus at 2,154 metres and the Voisthaler Hut at 1,654 metres. These huts provide shelter and access to high routes, particularly around the Hochschwab peak and Edelspitzen. The area is also known for its karst water systems, with the Kläfferquelle being one of the most important springs in the Eastern Alps. Geological studies have highlighted the dynamic cave networks beneath the plateau, attracting speleologists. A visitor to the Hochschwab finds a rugged alpine world of sheer cliffs, high plateaus and deep valleys. Well-marked paths lead through the limestone terrain, offering views of peaks like Ringkamp and Beilstein. The alpine huts serve as bases for climbers and hikers, with routes ranging from gentle walks to demanding ascents. The surrounding foothills provide gentler landscapes, ideal for less strenuous exploration. Museums in Bodenbauer and Wildalpen offer insights into the region’s geological and hydrological history. The contrast between the high limestone peaks and the lower greywacke foothills creates a varied and rewarding landscape for all who venture into the Hochschwab.
