Falls of Tarf

The Falls of Tarf is a waterfall in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. It stands 769 metres above sea level in gently rolling countryside. Pitlochry, the nearest town, lies 19.8 kilometres to the south. The land around the falls is mostly mixed woodland. The site sits far north of London, about 600 kilometres away. The waterfall is worth the journey for its quiet setting away from crowds. Its modest height and modest flow make it less dramatic than famous falls, yet it rewards walkers with solitude. The surrounding forest offers shade and shelter on windy days. The path to the falls is short but steep in places. Visitors often hear the water before they see it. At the falls the Tarf Burn drops over a low rocky lip into a deep pool. The water is clear enough to show the stones below. The woodland path leads close to the brink, where spray keeps the rocks damp. Beyond the falls the burn continues through the trees, quieter now. The whole scene feels remote despite being within reach of Pitlochry.
